This spring, Guide Through the Bible begins a new video podcast series in the book of Acts.
In this series, we look at the record of Jesus’ continuing work as his kingdom spreads from Jerusalem to Judea & Samaria and to the ends of the earth, turning the world upside down with Jesus.
Luke organized the Book of Acts around Jesus’ command that His followers be witnesses “in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). The account of Acts shows this gospel movement spreading outward through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The parts of this study on Acts with follow the same pattern—the Progression of the Gospel—as we trace God’s mission: beginning in Jerusalem, reaching Judea and Samaria, and spreading to the ends of the earth.
This will be Part 1 of the Acts series, and we will study Acts 1-7, examining the expansion of Jesus’ work that begins in Jerusalem. We examine the role of the Holy Spirit in this expansion of the early church and see that the mission of Acts did not stop—it continues to this day through us, Jesus’ church.
In this series, we will explore how the church is turning the world upside down with Jesus and how we continue to be part of this work in our day.
In this series, we have a variety of guest speakers coming on the podcast to discuss the book of Acts in sections. We will examine how the Holy Spirit convicts, guides, and empowers believers to live as faithful witnesses of Jesus. We see how the Holy Spirit empowers believers through the Spirit-led Authorship of Luke, the Spirit-led authority given by Christ, and the apostle’s actions, confirmed by signs and wonders that attest to divine authority.
Our aim in this series is not only to help you study the powerful Acts of the Apostles but also to enable you to find practical ways to participate as faithful witnesses of Christ locally and globally in your life.
Arlin Horst is our first guest Bible Teacher, is our Director of Programs, and appeared as a guest on our Ruth and Jonah podcast series. In this introduction to the series, Arlin outlines what we aim to learn together on the podcast. In Acts, we see the continuation of Jesus’ work and explore what parts of Acts are descriptive and what are prescriptive for us now.
Arlin examines Jesus’ last moments with the disciples and His last promises to them—of the Spirit, of power, and of his return. This episode also explores the significant account of Jesus’ ascension.
Arlin teaches on the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. In this amazing account, the church is established and Peter preaches repentance baptism, and the receiving of the Holy Spirit.
Sergio Penner, our Bible Teaching Manager, is the Bible teacher on episode 4, studying Acts 3-4. He will teach on the establishment of the church that happened through miracles, and through Peter’s second sermon. In this passage, we see the Holy Spirit’s power radiating through the early Church, shaping a community that learns to expect.
Jeremy Sensenig, our Director of Strategy, will be another guest Bible teacher. He will study Acts 5-6 and will examine some of the early church’s problems. He will discuss Ananias and Sapphira and explore how the widows were neglected and left without food in the early church.
Anthony High, our podcast host, will take on the role of Bible teacher in our episode on Acts 7-8:13. Anthony will discuss the early church’s persecution, especially looking at the disciples, Stephen, and Paul.
