Crystal Sees Children in Ghana Receive Bibles

Since beginning my job at Heralds of Hope, part of my responsibilities has been to send monthly donations received for Torch Ministries to Dr Ohene Kumi, one of our ministry partners. Dr Kumi founded Torch Ministries over 30 years ago. One day, he was playing soccer in the park with some neighborhood children when he was given the vision to start a ministry for children in the public schools in his home country of Ghana.

Shortly after that, he quit his job as an accountant and began visiting schools and inviting the staff to allow the students to participate in Bible lessons as part of their schooling. Today, over 300 schools participate, and he has impacted thousands of middle schoolers with the gospel of Christ. When school is on summer break, he uses the buildings to hold VBS for the village children.

I was recently given the privilege of visiting Dr Ohene in Ghana and seeing the work God is doing through the Torch Ministry team. The team has grown to include other pastors from different regions of Ghana and neighboring countries to help get the gospel into more schools.

During our visit, we traveled to different schools, handing out certificates of completion and Bibles to the students who had successfully completed the Bible lessons. We prayed with the school staff and administration for wisdom as they taught the children and for protection for the children as they traveled the roads on foot to school each day.

Ghana is a beautiful country with mountains and coastlines bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Most roads are filled with potholes, dips, and bumps, making travel slow and brutal for vehicles. Animals run the streets and villages at will, returning to their homes at night. Street vendors and taxis fill the streets of the towns with small, primitive shops. Many ladies walk around with their merchandise on their heads, selling to cars as they pass by.

Ghanaians are religious people. Many cars have religious slogans on the back windows, and many businesses have religious names, such as “Thy Will Be Done Food Joint.” (These may or may not indicate a relationship with Jesus.)

The people are very friendly and accommodated our needs above and beyond our expectations. We enjoyed the delicious foods, especially the fresh mangos. The weather was lovely, and I enjoyed the pretty flowers, birds, and vegetable gardens we saw as we traveled the countryside.

I am very thankful for the opportunity to visit the Torch Ministry team and see their outreach and impact on Ghana’s children and families firsthand. Now, when I send your monthly donations to Torch Ministries each month, I can pray for the pastors who travel bumpy roads to visit the schools, see the smiling faces of the happy children who learn about Jesus, and understand more fully the impact of our work here at Heralds of Hope as we work together to win the world.
