Snares & Tares

I have been thinking about the temptations of Jesus. He did not sin, but he was tempted. He was tempted like we are.1For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. – Hebrews 4:15 KJV

Satan tempts us with good things, or at least the “good side” of things. He doesn’t come up to us and say, “How would you like to have a miserable life? If you did drugs, you could have that.” No, he can’t sell us on the long-term, he has to sell us on the temporary, the high, the here, the now.2Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. – 1 John 2:15-17 KJV

If Jesus had used his miraculous power to feed himself,3Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. – Matthew 4:1-4 KJV do you think he would have multiplied the bread for the 5,000?
If Jesus had jumped from the temple roof, expecting God to save him,4Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. – Matthew 4:5-7 KJV do you think he would have submitted to the death on the cross?
If Jesus had worshipped Satan to gain power over the world,5Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. – Matthew 4:5-7 KJV would he have had power over death? And do you think that Jesus’ name would be a name above all names, in heaven, and earth, and under the earth?6Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. – Philippians 2:9-11 KJV
Jesus won for a reason, and we have a reason to win.7Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. – Hebrews 12:1-2 KJV
To God be the Glory!

How are we responding to various temptations?

Beware the Snares & Tares

There is a heavenly home above,
All free from earthly cares,
But here below, imperfect love;
Beware the snares and tares.

The best of earth that we can choose
Can bring to us a snare,
If we are not prepared to lose;
Beware the snares and tares.8Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? – Matthew 16:24-26 KJV

The fellowship of humankind
Can change us unawares,
If deeper truth we do not find;
Beware the snares and tares.9Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. – Psalm 1:1-2 KJV

So ask yourself: Am I the friend
That leads my friends to God?
Or am I one to shift the load,
And wander far abroad?

The things that I desire most –
Am I within their grasp?
Or do I thank the Lord above,
And treasure chests unclasp?10Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. – Matthew 6:19-21 KJV

For home is where my treasure is,
And earth is where I roam;
So guide my steps and keep my heart
From snares and tares till home.

    1. Thank you, Dale, for your encouraging words. It is an honor to express the gift of writing on the Heralds of Hope blog.
      What better thing is there to write than to write for God’s glory? What better gift is there to give than that which is given for God’s glory? God bless you and other readers as you live for God’s glory where you are.
